The History of Cherryfield Schools

Schools have always been important to the residents of Cherryfield. The first school house erected in Cherryfield was a one room 20 x 24 foot building built in 1816. The land was donated by Charles Willey. It is thought to have been in the field across from Wyman’s of Maine. Before the schoolhouse was built, classes were held in people’s homes when a teacher was available.
By the mid 1800’s there were nine schools in town. There were schools on the Ridge, the Intervale, the Upper Corner, Spragues Falls, Tunk District, the Lower Corner, Willey District, Shaw District, and Cherryfield Academy.
In 1900, the Grammar School was built behind the cemetery on Main Street. It served the 7th & 8th grades. By the mid 1940’s, many of the outlying schools were closed, and the children went to the Grammar School.
The new school known as Cherryfield Elementary School was built and ready for classes in the fall of 1952. It was “state of the art” for its time. It has had many changes over the years with a new section being built on in 1986-87, but if you look closely you can still see the original bones of the building.

The Cherryfield School Department utilizes all assessment data to help inform our practices at the district, school, classroom and individual levels for our students.  Although we encourage students and parents to participate fully in our assessment program, it is important to note that parents/guardians may opt their child out of state testing.  If you are interested in doing so, please reach out to your child's principal to make this request in writing.
